How important do I think education is?

Education is something that is not only very important to me, but is a part of me. When someone says the word EDUCATION, most think:

  • Pre-School
  • Grammar School
  • Middle School
  • High School
  • College and so on….

I find this to be interesting because these are parts, levels if you will of institutions that offer an education. Are they needed for a child or adult to receive an education? I guess that depends on the level you are in need of. Personally, in my opinion no, these institutions are not needed, all except for college maybe.

My point being that in today’s world home-schooling is on a rise by using programs such as K-12 which is a computer program and many colleges are now offering courses online.

So “How important is education to me?” Being a teacher I think the answer is pretty clear, Very Important. In 1997 when I graduated from college and started teaching at a private elementary school, to me that was the only thing acceptable. Now that I have children of my own I see things in a different light. LEARNING is very important, but is how we learn even more important? Does a child have to sit in a desk with a workbook and a teacher standing at a promethium board the only way to learn? For some students, yes I believe they do. All children need discipline, structure, time management, a schedule. All children can not sit in a desk and “learn” all day long. This is where if it were an option, home schooling would be a good idea. Many people would argue with me, but there is more to learning and getting a great education than the traditional method.

As I have become older, I often wonder if my boys are really getting a good education, with a top-notch curriculum? This has nothing to do with a teacher’s ability to teach, because there are fabulous teachers in this world. I am speaking of each subject’s curriculum, what the students are being tested on and how they are being tested.

I know that both of my children are in the best school districts in our area, I know their teachers are well-trained and are most qualified to do excellent jobs. I just wonder if I could do a better job teaching them myself? Crazy, I know, but it is always in the back of my mind.

Everyday is a learning experience and where I live there are a community of home schooling families, that work together. I am not promoting the idea, it is just a thought. I am out there, in the schools and the communities. I know what goes on and just wonder if I could do it. Teach my boys, more……quality, more one on one. More time for us to be together. This is all crazy talk, you are thinking as you read. I’m not going off the deep end, I’m just thinking.

Getting an education is the building blocks of our future. It is the best gift that your parents could ever give to you, and then eventually to yourself. Learning gives us the tools of life, to be able to live and give to society. I’m just becoming aware that there are options for us to choose from. Some will work, some will not.

Education is very important to me. It shapes and molds us to better ourselves. It helps in strengthening our minds to develop strong ideas and thought processes. Everyone learns at different paces and in different ways. That is what makes us human. And if you want to make it in today’s world, you need an education. And like the popular statement goes, “You have to learn to earn.”
